Many people consider pomelo to be a relative of grapefruit, but in fact this is not the case. There is, rather, a reverse relationship: many reference books give information that grapefruit is an almost degenerate pomelo.

Today, pomelo fruits are appreciated and loved almost all over the world, but this citrus occupies a special place in Chinese culture. It is considered a symbol of prosperity and wealth and is a good gift for the New Year. Pomelo is also popular in Thailand. It is presented as a gift to spirits during religious rituals by the Chinese living there. Exotic citrus is used in cooking to prepare a variety of dishes. In addition to Thailand, from which the fruits are exported to various countries, it is grown in Taiwan, southern Japan, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Israel, and Tahiti.

The fruit of this plant reaches 16-18 cm in length and up to 30 cm in diameter. It contains large segments and seeds. It has a sweet and sour taste and is very juicy, the pulp has a pleasant aroma. The pomelo plant is suitable for cultivation in spacious, bright and cool rooms. They reproduce by grafting. It is quite difficult to grow pomelo at home; it requires a lot of space and needs high air humidity.

Pomelo - beneficial properties

Pomelo helps with fatigue, weakness, insomnia, diabetes, sore throat, stomach pain and other infectious diseases. Citrus contains pectin, which is effective in lowering blood pressure. The fruits are also useful for lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of diseases of the cardiovascular system and heart. Pomelo peel also has beneficial properties. It is rich in bioflavonoids, which helps get rid of excess estrogen.

Pomelo helps improve digestion and is also quite effective for weight loss. It contains a special enzyme that absorbs fats, reduces sugar and starch in the body. Therefore, it is recommended for regular use by people who are obese or slightly overweight. In general, this exotic fruit will relieve depression, apathy and bad mood, and give energy, joy and good mood.

Cooking method

Ingredients: pork (about 500 g), pomelo (100 g), 100 grams each of fresh blueberries and red bell peppers, butter (30 g), teriyaki kikkoman sauce (4-5 tbsp. l), green onion (1 bunch),
sugar (1 tbsp).

Cooking method

We divide the meat into two steaks, it is better to take the neck part. Cut each piece lengthwise and unfold it like a “book.” Cover with cling film and beat lightly. Marinate in marinade sauce for an hour. Peel the pomelo and remove the membranes. Take two slices. Place chopped leeks on the meat and sliced ​​peppers on top. Place a slice of pomelo on top. We roll the meat into rolls and tie them with thread. Place in the pan and cover with foil on top. Microwave for about 15 minutes at 200 degrees. Then remove the foil and cook for another 10 minutes until browned.

These rolls can be prepared at home or on a grill over coals outdoors. Prepare the sauce. To do this, grind the blueberries with sugar and add the juice from the mold where the meat was cooked (about a tablespoon). Add butter to the sauce and heat it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. Since November, supermarkets have been selling my favorite type of citrus fruit - pomelo. I not only like the pleasant-tasting pulp of the fruit, I love candied pomelo, or more precisely, from the peels of this fruit. Making candied fruits at home is not difficult, and the result is a pleasant, aromatic and healthy dessert.

Benefits of pomelo peels

I mentioned in the article, but I will repeat here, that all citrus fruits have useful not only the pulp, but also the rind. It contains vitamin P, which is important for the body. Flavonoids from the vitamin P group in combination with vitamin C, which is also abundant in pomelo peel, have a positive effect on blood vessels, reducing their fragility and permeability.

The benefits of pomelo peels are important for women:

  • Vitamin P helps remove excess estrogen from the body
  • limonoids, as scientists have found, have shown themselves to be substances that work well to prevent breast cancer and help the female body recover faster after surgery and chemotherapy.

Candied pomelo - step-by-step recipe with photos

The pomelo's crust is quite thick and I always felt sorry for throwing it away. The beneficial properties impressed me and I went to the Internet to find out how to use it. They offer to dry the pomelo peel and add it to tea, they say it makes a pleasant drink. But I haven’t gotten around to drying yet, because I made candied pomelo and I liked them so much that I’ve been making them for the second season.

Ingredients:

  • pomelo peel from 1 fruit
  • zest of ½ lemon
  • sugar - 2 cups
  • water - 1 glass

How to make candied fruits from pomelo peels:

  1. Although pomelo is sold in supermarkets packaged in cellophane, the product is overseas, it comes from afar, we don’t know how it is processed. Therefore, before preparing candied fruit from the peels, you need to wash it well.
  2. Pomelo is a large fruit, its crust is thick, if you don’t know how best to remove it, then watch the video
  3. There is no need to remove the thick white inner layer of the crust. Cut into slices.
  4. Place in a saucepan, add water (until it is the same glass as stated in the ingredients). Put on the fire, as soon as the water boils, boil for literally half a minute
  5. Pour everything into a colander and rinse the pomelo crusts with cold water. Put it back into the pan, add water and put it on the fire. This procedure must be done 4 times, do not forget to rinse the hot crusts with cold water each time
  6. The last time, 5 times, cook with sugar. Place the peels in a saucepan, pour in 1 glass of water, add sugar and add the zest from half a lemon.
  7. Place over high heat until it boils quickly, stir and reduce heat to low. Cook for 40 - 50 minutes until all the syrup has evaporated
  8. Place candied fruits on a plate and dry naturally

I don’t know how many days it takes to dry the candied fruits completely; I don’t have the patience to wait. I start eating them almost immediately. First, like delicious pomelo marmalade, and then like candied fruits.

  • If you want to get candied pomelo quickly, it is recommended to dry them in the oven at a minimum temperature (60 - 70 degrees) for 4 - 5 hours. Keep the oven door slightly open. I didn’t do this, so I can’t say what and how it will turn out. If you have an electric dryer, then you can entrust this task to it.
  • One more thing: candied fruits prepared according to this recipe retain a slight bitterness. For my taste, this does not spoil the dessert at all; this spice is even pleasant. If you want to get candied fruits without bitterness, it is recommended to soak the crusts first. Place them in a saucepan, fill with cold water, cover with a plate-shaped weight on top so that the crusts are completely submerged in water. Soak for 24 hours, changing the water 2-3 times, then cook as indicated in the recipe.
  • Firm, well-dried candied fruits can be stored in a glass container with a lid at room temperature for up to 6 months.
  • If the candied fruits are not completely dried, it is recommended to store them for a couple of months in the refrigerator in a sealed container. If you want to store it for a longer period, put it in a plastic bag and store it in the freezer.
